The 9 Best Smokeless Fire Pits of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

Enjoy the ambiance of a fire without smelling like smoke

Fire burning in a Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 in a backyard

The Spruce / Carolyn Malcoun

If you’ve ever come in from enjoying your fire pit feeling like your entire body and clothes smell like smoke, you’re not alone. For this reason—among many others—smokeless fire pits have risen in popularity over the past few years. We decided to test a few of the most popular options to see if they really are as smoke-free as they claim.

We found that while the term "smokeless" might be a slight exaggeration of what these fire pits can do (you're still lighting a fire, after all!), the reduction in smoke was enough to make a lasting impression on our testers. It turns out that the same design feature that makes these fire pits nearly smokeless also makes the fires they produce extra cozy. Larry Campbell, a licensed electrical contractor and member of The Spruce Home Improvement Review Board explains, "This is achieved via a double wall configuration where the wood is burned extra hot by air holes that feed the fire. This extra hot burn consumes the wood to a point that little to no smoke is produced."

To find the best options for different households' setups, we tested wood- and propane-powered pits. At the end of testing, two things were very obvious: the fire pits that made the cut are way easier to light than an old-school fire pit bowl and they really do reduce the amount of smoke usually associated with a backyard fire pit. Because of that, which one you choose will be somewhat up to personal preference—you can pick the style, size, and fuel source you want, knowing that all of our picks live up to our smoke-free standards.

What We Like
  • Easy to assemble

  • Compact design

  • Durable

What We Don't Like
  • Emits smoke when lit with paper

  • No cover provided

Out of all of the options we tested, we found the Yukon 2.0 by Solo Stove to be one of the easiest to use and care for, fairly priced, and extremely durable. The design allows lots of airflow to feed the flames, so your fire gets to the temperature that helps limit smoke emission. Because the first burns so hot, we did notice that this fire pit does require plenty of wood, so be prepared to keep a good amount on hand if you plan to keep the fire going for an entire evening.

The Yukon 2.0 doesn't require any assembly as it comes in three parts—a stand, the pit, and a ventilation ring—all of which easily stack on each other and require no additional tools. Although this model doesn't automatically come with a Shelter—Solo Stove's structured fabric cover—you can purchase a Shelter separately or opt for the Yukon Backyard Bundle 2.0, which includes a shield, shelter, and a lid. The bundle is especially beneficial if you don’t have a covered area to protect the fire pit when not in use. We also particularly like the shield's design, which protects people nearby against pops and embers that spark from the fire.

Our earliest takeaway from testing is a good lesson for anyone looking to buy a smokeless fire pit—make sure you use quality kindling. For our first test, we used paper instead of small pieces of wood to feed the fire, which resulted in a ton of smoke. However, once we switched to a better fire starter, we found that the Yukon 2.0 absolutely lived up to its claims, and continued to perform as expected.

How It Performed Long-Term

After our initial testing period, we tested this model for four more months and continued to enjoy gathering around an almost smokeless fire. We reported no more issues in setting it up properly and found that the little amount of smoke that was produced funneled upwards instead of blowing at our guests around the fire. During colder months, we were able to easily clean out and store the fire pit, but we did find it a bit heavy to move, so make sure you have someone around to help if needed.

What We Like
  • Requires little maintenance

  • Less expensive than larger brands

  • Easy to dispose of ash

  • Relatively easy to move

What We Don't Like
  • No carrying handle

If the Solo Stove is out of your budget or you don’t love its stainless steel design, we recommend the Blue Sky Outdoor Living Peak Smokeless Patio Fire Pit. This design checked all of our boxes: easy to set up and light, equal heat distribution, and minimal ash and smoke output. Aside from removing plastic packaging, all you have to do is place this fire pit where you want it and insert the removable ashtray and plate. We love that the tray has handles on it, so you can easily lift it out and dump the ashes once they’ve cooled.

During our testing, we used this fire pit several times and tried a variety of starters to understand its performance with different materials. To keep the fire going, we opted for sticks found in our backyard, and we loved that we didn’t have to constantly poke the fire and feed it to experience a large heat off-put. In fact, we were almost uncomfortably hot a few times, but we were also testing during an 85-degree evening in Alabama.

Although this fire pit is 35 pounds, it’s relatively easy to move because of the separate ashtray and plate. We do still wish it had handles on the main drum, but we recognize that this design may not function the same with handles and isn’t marketed as a super portable option. All in all, we think that if you’re less attached to a brand name and just want a smokeless fire pit that performs well, this model is a great option.

What We Like
  • Lightweight

  • Has carrying handles and case

  • Great size for camping trips

  • Easy to set up

What We Don't Like
  • Some pellets may be more challenging to light

This smokeless fire pit from INNO STAGE is fantastic, and we were very satisfied while using it in our backyard and on a camping trip. The handles on each side make it easy to carry and take with you, and the ashtray easily slips into the double-walled portion when you pack it in the carrying case. We opted to start this fire pit using pellets and were shocked by how little smoke it produced.

However, it's worth noting that we struggled to light the pellets at first. We're not sure if this is a fault in the pellets or our lighting techniques, but we had to opt for a small blowtorch to get an adequate flame on the pellets. Once we had it lit, this fire pit was a wonderful, compact heat source. It worked great for roasting marshmallows on a camping trip, and we loved how little ash was left after the pellets were extinguished. While a smaller fire pit may not be on everyone's list, this design would be a great option for anyone who isn't sure they want a larger, more permanent fire pit in their backyard.

If you’re looking for a permanent fire pit fixture, the Breeo X Series is an attractive design that also performed just as well as other wood-burning options in this roundup. Additionally, it’s also much larger making it a great choice for families. While testing, we appreciated this pit's ready-to-go arrival, requiring only removal from its shipping box. This pit is elevated, which allows plenty of oxygen to create a hot blaze, and it has a double-wall design to trap smoke and re-burn it, resulting in almost no smoke. We found that this pit did have a little bit of smoke, but it was still far less than a traditional fire pit.

This fire pit is very heavy; we recommend unboxing it where you plan to use it, so you don’t have to worry about moving it too much. Breeo also provides several customization features including three size options and two finishes. You can also choose to bundle your purchase with lids, covers, grills, and even parts to incorporate the fire pit into a brick surround. While it is expensive, the fire pit comes with a lifetime warranty, although its high-quality construction and materials leave us believing you won't need to worry about its long-term durability.

How It Performed Long-Term

After using this fire pit consistently for four months, we're pleased that it is still maintaining its "smokeless" performance. Plus, we found cleaning and storing this fire pit to be an easy process, when needed.

What We Like
  • Includes everything to get started

  • Reliable burn time

  • Includes ash pan and cover

  • Compatible with firewood or wood packs

What We Don't Like
  • Additional wood packs add to cost

This sleek smokeless fire pit provides everything you need to enjoy a night of smoke-free enjoyment next to a warm fire. Its wood pack—a pellet alternative to regular firewood—provided a consistent 30 minutes of burn time, and we did not notice any smoke during this time. Once you’ve used up the included pack of TIKI wood pellets, you can purchase more separately; however, you also can use any firewood, although we recommend ensuring it is dry to maintain the smokeless aspect of the fire pit. We also only experienced minimal smoke when using firewood.

This fire pit is 18 inches deep with a cone in the middle, which helps centralize its heat and minimize the smoke from firewood. We felt consistent heat from 5 feet away, even though Tiki only claims this model provides up to 4 feet of radiant heat. Aside from its impressive heat output, we also appreciated its durable and heavy design, which prevents it from being toppled over in the case of heavy winds. The included cloth cover is also great for protecting the unit after it has cooled. The ash pan was easy to empty, but we recommend investing in a fire pit brush or ash poker to help the pellet (or wood) ash fall into the pan.

While this fire pit isn’t the cheapest option out there, it gives off an impressive amount of heat, plus it's easy to assemble and use.

What We Like
  • Comes with a carry bag

  • CSA approved

  • Can control flame level

What We Don't Like
  • Propane hose could be longer

  • Doesn’t offer ambiance of a real fire

Fussing with wood, waiting for a fire to die down, and then responsibly disposing of ashes can be a hassle, especially if you’re looking for a fire pit to take tailgating. We found the Outland Living Mega Firebowl, which is a propane fire pit, required practically no setup time and we loved how the flame size could easily be controlled with a knob. Plus, this fire bowl is truly smokeless since it uses gas, a clean-burning fuel.

Despite the 10-foot-long propane hose, we did find ourselves wishing it was just a tad longer to be truly “out of sight” in our backyard, but we’re sure 10 feet would be more than sufficient for smaller backyards or tailgate settings. This fire pit is CSA-approved, which means it has met electrical and mechanical requirements established by the CSA Group, an organization that establishes standards for product development and testing. Therefore, it is safe to use during most fire bans; however, we do recommend double-checking your local ordinances and guidelines before taking this on your next camping trip. Plus, this fire pit's control valve knob is great for especially windy evenings when you may want to minimize the flame, or alternatively, cooler evenings when a larger flame is needed.

Despite all of our positive remarks about this fire pit, we will say that it doesn’t offer quite the same ambiance as a true wood-burning fire. If you prefer the occasional pop of wood and the typical campfire smell you would get from an outdoor fireplace or traditional fire pit, then this pick may not be best for you.

How It Performed Long-Term

After four additional months of testing, we used this hassle-free firepit almost every weekend. It really did add to our outdoor entertaining, since we didn't use our wood-burning firepit quite as often in the past. We did notice discolorization of the rocks over time, but we noticed no changes to the firepit overall.

What We Like
  • Bluetooth fan and flame control

  • Rechargeable battery for fan

  • Works with wood or charcoal

What We Don't Like
  • Carrying case sold separately

  • Small

Generally, smokeless fire pits are low-tech items, but the BioLite FirePit+ has a Bluetooth connection that allows you to adjust the fan and flame intensity right from your phone. This fire pit's smoke levels are controlled by 51 air jets, which also helps to improve the combustion of the fire's fuel source. The fan is powered by a rechargeable battery that provides up to 30 hours (low setting), 14 hours (medium setting), or 7 hours (high setting) of heat.

We didn't have any issues lighting this fire pit during testing, but we're hesitant to call it a truly smokeless fire. As expected, a little smoke was produced when we first lit it, but we think the fan helped dissipate the smoke, unlike other picks, which are smokeless because the fire burns hot enough to re-burn the smoke. The BioLite is also on the smaller side and best for camping rather than as a permanent fire pit at your home. We do like that this is easy to store and has collapsible legs, which makes placing it in the carry case (sold separately) very easy. Although we recognize that having a Bluetooth feature on a fire pit may not be on everyone's priority list, we think this fire pit's innovation alone deserves some recognition, and we loved how much heat it put off while we used it.

How It Performed Long-Term

Four months of testing confirmed that this is not a completely smokeless fire pit. In fact, we felt like it reduced the smoke compared to a traditional wood-burning fire pit, by about half (depending on the fan speed). So if you don't want to smell like smoke at all, this would not be the best option. However, we still think that this is a great option for traveling with since it is very small and easy to carry, and we continue to enjoy the smart features.

What We Like
  • Easy to use on a whim

  • Doubles as a table

  • Does not emit sparks

What We Don't Like
  • Sticker packaging difficult to remove

  • Doesn't offer same ambiance as wood fire

If you have a smaller deck or patio, a fire table can be a great option that's easy to control and less of a safety concern compared to traditional wood-burning pits. We found the Hampton Bay Crossridge Antique Brass Gas Fire Pit quite enjoyable to use, plus it looks great too. Since this table is powered by a propane tank, it is truly smokeless in design. The flame is also adjustable, so you can ramp it up or down as you like. When we first unboxed this table, we were suspicious of its durability, as the steel casing felt flimsy, but it has proven to be very durable with multiple uses, and we didn't notice any wear to it.

Keep in mind that you will need to purchase and supply propane to use this smokeless fire pit, but the hook-up is very similar to a gas grill, so there's no additional learning curve to lighting this fire pit. Also, the gas removes the traditional ambiance of a wood-burning fire, but that's something we were willing to overlook given how easy it is to maintain this table. We will note that while removing the packaging, some of the safety stickers were very stubborn to fully come off, so some sticky residue was left over. All in all, you can skip a traditional patio heater and opt for this aesthetically pleasing fire table, if a conversation set is the focal point of your patio or deck.

How It Performed Long-Term

As with other propane-fueled firepits we tested on this list, during months of testing, we used this fire pit much more often than wood-burning options we've had in the past. Since no prep and no cleanup is needed, we often gathered for a quick cozy fire, even for just 10 minutes at a time. We loved being able to place the cover on the fireplace when not in use so we could use the whole table during other gatherings.

What We Like
  • Controlled flame

  • Attractive design

  • Great for apartments and homes without a yard

What We Don't Like
  • Slight chemical smell

  • Not intended to be a heat source

Some homeowners’ associations don’t allow traditional fire pits or propane tank-powered bowls, so a tabletop option can be a great way to create a similar ambiance without violating any of your home community’s rules. As might be expected with any tabletop flame, this bowl does not put off a lot of heat, so it’s not intended to be a major source of heat on chilly evenings. We found this bowl is much better as a decorative flame. When we first lit the gel fuel, it did produce a slight chemical smell, but we noted that it wasn’t overpowering or terribly unpleasant.

Overall, we really enjoy the controlled flame that this bowl produces. You will have to be prepared to purchase additional gel fuel containers, as the burn time is only about 3 hours per can. Similar to our other propane-powered picks, this tabletop version won’t offer you the exact same experience as a wood-burning fire, but it’s an attractive alternative for anyone who can’t opt for a wood-burning smokeless fire pit.

How It Performed Long-Term

Over a four-month period, we enjoyed using this small fire bowl once or twice a month when we were entertaining guests or just relaxing on the patio. Although it does not add much warmth (unless you are within a 1-foot radius), it does add to the ambiance, almost instantly.

Final Verdict

After testing 28 fire pits, our best overall smokeless fire pit is the Solo Stove Yukon 2.0. It has a deep fire pit, helping with its smokeless technology to keep ash and sparks from flying out, plus it's easy to use and compact enough to transport. Our best design pick, the TIKI 25-Inch Stainless Steel Low Smoke Fire Pit is another great option for those wanting the traditional aroma and feel of a wood-burning fire without the smoke and soot that come with it.

Other Options We Tested

The following are additional products we tested and stand by; though they didn’t quite meet our rigorous standards, we think they’re still worth considering.

Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0

Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0, Smokeless Fire Pit

Amazon

This fire pit is the smaller version of our best overall pick, the Solo Stove Yukon 2.0. While it's a great investment piece, we think you can have a similar experience with other less expensive options we've listed in this roundup. Overall, we have no complaints about this design but it does produce less heat than larger options, and it's slightly difficult to zip into the provided carrying case.

Although this fire pit was on par with the performance of other models we tested, we weren't big fans of its finish or ash removal process. Rather than having a removable tray, you have to push all of the ash through a small hole at the bottom of the container. We found this to be a tedious process. Plus, this fire pit weighs over 80 pounds, so it's a much more permanent fixture compared to other models we tested that were under 40 pounds and easily portable with help.

How We Tested the Smokeless Fire Pits

Over the past year, we've had the opportunity to test a total of 28 different smokeless fire pits. When we first received the fire pits, we timed our unboxing and setup process. We also noted any interesting aspects of each fire pit's design that made it easy or difficult to set up properly. To determine the heating performance and smoke control, we made sure to use the fire pits at least three times during our testing period and kept them lit for at least one hour each time. With each use, we noted the type of fuel we used, the weather in our area, and the time of day that we used the fire pit. We also noted any smoke and moved around the fire to note any heat differences. This also allowed us to further examine the design of each fire pit. We asked ourselves questions like: Is it easy to add more fuel to the pit? Does the size of the pit impact the burn performance? Would it be easy to cook or roast food over the fire?

Toward the end of our testing period, we considered the durability of each product. For wood-burning models, this meant observing any scorch marks on the sides of the fire pits. While also true for propane models, we more often saw scratch marks left from lava rocks provided with the fire pit, since propane flames are much more controlled. However, the lava rocks did darken in color. After all of this hands-on testing, we decided on the value of the fire pit. We looked at the current manufacturer prices and decided whether the performance matched the price listed. To get an idea of how these products hold up over time, we kept using our top picks for over a four-month period and updated our list with additional insights.

What to Look for in a Smokeless Fire Pit

Fuel

A smokeless fire pit uses wood or propane. Consider whether you want the ambiance of a wood-burning fire, which is often cheaper than propane. Many smokeless fire pits include manufacturer-supplied fuel pellets, but you also can supply your own wood. Charcoal heats evenly, which makes it ideal for cooking. Propane is the most expensive type of fuel, but it is very easy to use.

Our best gas pick, the Outland Living Firebowl Mega Outdoor Gas Fire Pit, uses a propane tank to fuel its controlled flame. We found that it's especially enjoyable because you can easily adjust the height of the flame based on the weather and your current setting or needs. We will note that no matter the fuel you land on, you should be prepared for the additional costs associated with keeping that fuel stockpiled for future uses.

Material

Fire pits often are made of stainless steel and may be painted or finished with fire-safe surfaces. Be sure to closely consider the material of a fire pit because any materials that are not fire-safe may melt or burn away. Smokeless fire pits tend to burn hotter than other fire pits, making construction material a priority purchasing factor.

You should also consider your fire pit's use when looking at the different materials available. "If you plan to move the pit often, the well-ventilated aluminum is best," says Larry Campbell, a licensed electrical contractor and member of The Spruce Home Improvement Review Board. For example, our best overall pick, the Solo Stove Yukon 2.0 has this type of construction and has held up well during our long-term testing. Likewise, more permanent fire pits can be constructed from higher-grade and heavier materials. "If it is seldom to be moved, then plate steel is best due to its weight. If you don't plan to move it at all, a stone type made from prefab interlocking paver stones made for a retaining wall is best," said Campbell.

Size and Weight

For a portable fire pit, look for a small size, such as a 16-inch diameter or smaller. Folding fire pits also are easier to move from place to place and work better for camping trips or cookouts at parks. Our best budget and best smart picks, the INNO STAGE Smokeless Fire Pit, and the BioLite FirePit+, are both compact options that can easily be transported to different locations. The BioLit FirePit+ has collapsible legs, while the INNOSTAGE fire pit consists of three separate parts that easily nestle into each other before being stored in the carrying bag.

If you're looking for a more permanent solution, a larger and heavier fire pit is easy to install in your backyard—just be sure to purchase an appropriate weather cover for it. Aside from the fire pit's intended use, you should also consider the size of your yard, or dedicated outdoor space, the number of people you'd like to host around the pit, and the amount of fuel you're willing to burn during one sitting.
