The seed of an idea

FAMO Connect started with just your ordinary, run-of-the-mill houseplant.

Mohsin Hundekar and his wife Farha were stuck at home during the early months of COVID-19 pandemic, and decided to spiff up their place with a few plants. And while they both enjoyed having plants around, they took a critical piece for granted: actually taking care of the things.

“We’d buy a plant and then go, ‘okay, now what?’” Mohsin says. “How much water does it need? How much sunlight? Is it supposed to look like this?”

Software engineers by trade, the couple was very accustomed to figuring out all sorts of problems at work. But gardening? That was another matter entirely.

So, as the horticulture questions kept piling up, the two eventually came to realize something: if they were having this much trouble with their own little menagerie of potted pets, then surely other folks were too.

That’s when they set out to try and come up with a solution not only for themselves, but for all the other struggling plant parents out there. The idea: an app that would not only identify a plant, but also teach you how to take care of it (no green thumb required).

They started small; just a few features at first. “We wanted to see if people would even use it before we put more energy into it,” Mohsin explains. And that’s how the first version of Plant Identifier debuted in 2021.

Almost immediately, the messages and reviews started to roll in.

“People would say things like, ‘I thought my plant was a goner, but your app helped me bring it back to life,’” Mohsin says. “Turns out, our app was helping real people out there, in a very real way.”

Finding a way to keep things growing (and free)

They launched the app completely free to download and use. No paywalls. No subscriptions. But then, just like their houseplants, the app started to grow. More users. More work. More costs.

“There’s infrastructure, hosting, tools, development,” Mohsin says. “It got to the point where we had to be realistic: how do we keep supporting our users without going broke ourselves?”

This time, Mohsin and Farha didn’t need to build an app to get an answer. In fact, a platform was already available. They turned to Google AdMob to help them display ads in their app: “we chose AdMob for its reliability, global reach, strong analytics, and ease of integration with mobile apps.”

“Not everyone who uses our app is a professional gardener,” Mohsin concluded at the time. “They’re beginners, students, people who just want to keep a plant alive. Charging them didn’t feel right. Ads allow us to offer the core experience for free while still supporting development, infrastructure, and ongoing improvements.”

The choice also made a lot of sense both philosophically, and practically. “I was familiar with Google’s tools from my full-time job anyway,” Mohsin says. “AdMob was easy to integrate, plus it gave us the analytics to understand how people were using our app, what they liked, and what issues they were having.”

Ads helped to cover the cost of maintaining the app, and earn a living while they were at it, all while keeping the app accessible to everyone. “AdMob lets us scale as well,” Mohsin adds. “As more people use the app, the business grows with it. Ad revenue makes up almost 100% of our income.”

What’s taken root since

Today, Plant Identifier counts itself as part of an entire family of apps, all built by the husband-and-wife team.

Together, FAMO Connect’s family of apps has surpassed 1 million downloads and reached users in more than 100 countries, with growth driven entirely by organic discovery and word-of-mouth.

FAMO Connect now encompasses such useful apps as Bug Identifier, Bird Identifier, Dog Identifier, and even the catch-all app: Identify Anything.

But what binds them all together is an ad-supported business model.

“Ads are what allow us to keep things free,” Mohsin explains. “We can build, test, improve, all while keeping things free-to-access.”

And one of the more remarkable aspects is that the growth has all been organic. “Everything comes from people finding the apps, using them, and recommending them to others,” Mohsin says proudly.

Not only that, but running the business full-time has changed their lives in one more way, and probably the most profound of them all.

Mohsin and Farha made the deliberate decision to step away from traditional corporate careers at different points in their lives to focus fully on building FAMO Connect. In 2025, they also welcomed a new baby — underscoring how the same care, resilience, and problem-solving that shaped their company is now guiding their growing family as well.

“FAMO Connect has allowed us to work from home, together, while raising our child,” he says.

As for their other children (the apps, that is), the couple wants to break into whole new app categories while still continuing to improve the ones they’ve built.

“Yes, we’re still a small team,” says Mohsin, as he looks to the future. “But that’s intentional. We want to stay close to what we’re building and why we started. And through it all, Google tools are central to how we build, launch, and scale multiple apps efficiently as a small, bootstrapped team.”

It takes him back to that very first aha moment: watching a plant struggle, then bounce back.

“When someone tells us we helped them save something they care about,” Mohsin says, “that’s why we built these apps, to prove that with enough care, you can make anything grow.”

By keeping advanced identification tools free and accessible, FAMO Connect helps lower the barrier to learning and environmental awareness for millions of users worldwide.
