**The Risks of Sewer and Drain Backups**
When sewers and drains back up, mould and mildew can grow. These fungi thrive in damp environments and can quickly proliferate, releasing spores that, when inhaled, can cause respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and other health problems. People with asthma or immune deficiencies are particularly at risk.
In addition to mould, backed-up systems can emit sewer gas—a mixture of toxic and non-toxic gases, including methane, ammonia, and hydrogen sulphide, besides carrying a foul odour. These gases can lead to headaches, dizziness, respiratory problems, and—if exposure is prolonged or at high concentrations—even asphyxiation or explosions.
Bacteria and parasites are additional concerns. Raw sewage is a breeding ground for bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, as well as parasites like Giardia, which can spread disease.
