Earlier this month, Demi Lovato made it clear in their new interview with Harper's Bazaar that their years-long friendship with Selena Gomez is very much done. Us Weekly spoke to sources about what happened and how the two feel about each other now. There's no feud.

“Demi has no beef with Selena and there is no animosity between them,” a source said. “They’re just not friends at this point.”

Gomez and Lovato worked together as kids on Barney. They went on to become close friends in their teen years when both were starring on Disney Channel shows. Both had their public health struggles in their twenties: Lovato has spoken openly about their past eating disorder and being hospitalized for a drug overdose in 2018. Gomez previously suffered from lupus and had a kidney transplant. She also sought treatment for depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.

Sources spoke about the two just growing apart. “Selena has always tried to be nice to Demi, but over the last couple of years especially, the both of them have been through personal struggles,” Us's first source said. “In the past, Demi felt like Selena wasn’t always there for [them] and that the friendship wasn’t reciprocated.”

A second source said that they really haven't been close in years but remain kind to each other. “They haven’t been close friends since they were teenagers, so they haven’t really been there for each other during many of their public struggles,” the source said. “They’ve always been pleasant when they’ve seen each other but haven’t been close for many, many years.”

Gomez's last public show of support for Lovato came in January, after Lovato sang "Anyone" during the Grammys. Lovato originally recorded the song days before they overdosed in July 2018.

Gomez posted a heartfelt message to Lovato on her Instagram Story: "I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational, and DESERVED this moment was," Gomez wrote. "Demi, I'm so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery."

Lovato told Harper's Bazaar the message threw them off: “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so it felt …” Lovato stopped themself. “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
