Maple Beach Trailhead Improvement Planned In Bristol
A multi-use trail is being planned to better connect Maple Beach, the Delaware Canal trail, and Bristol Borough’s Waterfront.
State Sen. Steve Santarsiero and State Rep. Tina Davis, both Democrats, announced the borough has been awarded $250,000 in Act 13 Greenway, Trails and Recreation Program funds for what is called the Maple Beach Road trailhead improvement.
The funds are earmarked for the design and construction of a multi-use trail along Maple Beach Road, including a new parking area. The trail is set to provide a link between the recently constructed Maple Beach Road bridge, the canal trail terminus, and the Bristol Waterfront trails.
Borough officials haven’t unveiled a timeline or full scope of the project. However, the grant money means it is in the planning stage.
“This project will connect several recreational and natural resources in Bristol Borough, further expanding the trail network and allowing residents to get the most out of the area’s outdoor recreational opportunities,” said Santarsiero.
Davis pointed out the project’s long-term benefits.
“Preserving our outdoor recreation area for future generations is important to the quality of life in the Bristol community,” said Davis. “I look forward to the completion of the Maple Beach Road Trailhead Improvements project.”
The announcement follows the borough’s completion last year of a $2.2 million project that rebuilt the Maple Beach Bridge over Otter Creek. The new bridge has created a connection between Bristol Borough and the Maple Beach section of Bristol Township.
The new bridge can accommodate police and sewer plant workers on one lane, while the other lane is dedicated to bikers and walkers. The bridge is not open to vehicles operated by the general public.
Bristol Borough officials have long talked of the importance of developing recreational facilities in the Maple Beach area.
